Module 1: Bringing Learning Outside the Classroom
Welcome to Module 1!

The last two years forced traditional education to explore new avenues and learning methodologies, of that there is little doubt. Learning has been pulled from the physical classroom and has taken place both outdoors and through headphones, microphones and screens. However, there is a real difference between learning that takes place in an environment and learning that actually uses the environment. This MOOC is all about the latter!

In this MOOC we will discuss about teaching and learning beyond the typical classroom, and we will explore how we can make learning happen outside the school building and blend it with more traditional classroom-based learning. The MOOC focuses on learning outdoors, in nature or in the school yard, as well as learning indoors, in places other than the classroom, for example in museums or businesses.
To be more precise, and to start with, in this first module, you will:

Get introduced to the newest research-based knowledge concerning learning outside the classroom

Discuss about teaching and managing students outside the classroom

Reflect on the use of your school’s yard
To start with, we would like to have your views on the topic. Share your views in this short survey by 30 May 2022.

The results will be published on School Education Gateway around the end of June 2022.
Module 2: Learning Outside the Classroom: How?
Welcome to Module 2!

In this module we focus on the practicalities and the pedagogical considerations of teaching and learning beyond the typical classroom and blending it with classroom-based learning.
By the end of this module, you will:

Have a better understanding of the pedagogical approaches that are useful for teaching beyond the typical classroom

Explore ways of blending outdoor- and classroom-based learning

Exchange ideas about planning and assessing learning outside the classroom
Module 3: Learning Outside the Classroom: Where?
Welcome to Module 3!

Having a better understanding of the benefits of learning beyond the classroom and the way it can be organized, in this module we exchange ideas about organizing school visits in the local and global community, focusing on museums, businesses, nature and virtual visits.
In this module, we will:

Explore learning beyond the typical classroom

Reflect on activities that can be organised beyond the school building

Discover the preparation and follow up outside learning requires
Module 4: Developing a Lesson Plan for Learning Outside the Classroom
Welcome to the last module!

In this last module, we will see how we can assist discovery via our teaching by preparing a lesson plan for learning beyond the classroom.
By the end of this module, you will:

Develop a lesson plan for learning outside the classroom

Share your experiences and inspiring ideas with your colleagues
