This course provides essential information that a food additive applicant should be familiar with before submitting an application for the authorisation to place a food additive in the EU market. It covers the following topics:
- The EU food additive regulatory framework, explaining the roles of EFSA and the European Commission.
- The food additive application procedure.
- Notification of studies obligations.
- Good Laboratory Practice requirements for toxicological studies.
- Confidentiality requirements and the proactive disclosure of information.
- EFSA Administrative and Scientific guidance documents on food additives.
EFSA support services available for applicants, with particular attention to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

This course is intended for applicants preparing food additive applications in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No 1331/2008 and Commission Regulation (EU) No 234/2011.
