Hello everyone, this week we will be introducing delicious dishes that you should try if you go to the aegean side of Türkiye, namely İzmir. The city's cuisine is heavily influenced by Aegean and Mediterranean flavors, with an emphasis on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Here is a good occasion to learn some new, tasty Turkish words! 

 

Boyoz 

Boyoz is a type of savory pastry that is a specialty of Izmir. It is made from a simple dough of flour, water, and salt, which is rolled out thin and then folded repeatedly with a mixture of sunflower oil and tahini paste. The dough is then shaped into small rolls or circles and baked until crispy and golden brown. Boyoz has a flaky texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavor from the tahini. It is often served for breakfast or as a snack, usually with a hot cup of Turkish tea. Boyoz can be found in bakeries and cafes throughout Izmir, and it is a beloved local food that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike.

Kumru 

Kumru is a popular sandwich that originated in the city of İzmir. The sandwich is made with a type of Turkish bread called "simit", which is similar to a bagel, but is coated in sesame seeds. The bread is sliced in half and filled with a combination of sucuk (a type of spicy sausage), grilled cheese, tomato, and pickles. Midye dolma

Midye Dolma is often served as a meze dish, either as an appetizer or as part of a larger spread of small plates. It is a staple of Turkish cuisine and a must-try for anyone visiting İzmir.

Deniz Börülcesi 

Deniz Börülcesi, also known as sea beans or samphire, is a type of salty green vegetable that grows along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts of Türkiye. It has a crisp and succulent texture, and a slightly salty and briny flavor. In İzmir and other coastal cities, Deniz Börülcesi is often harvested and used in a variety of dishes, including salads, stews. It is also commonly served as a side dish, either boiled or sautéed with olive oil and garlic. Deniz Börülcesi is a nutritious vegetable that is high in vitamins and minerals, and it is a delicious and unique part of the Aegean and Mediterranean culinary culture.

İzmir Bomba 

İzmir bomba is a “bomb” of chocolate, as a bite taken from this cookie will result in a great flow of delicious chocolate into your mouth. This newly-growing dessert reached its popularity with the usage of social media. The richness of chocolate it possesses created amazing frames that resulted in mouth-watering pictures blasted through social media.  
İzmir Bomba became more known after these photos managed to gain great attention, and many bakeries across Türkiye started to produce this dessert.
