Latvian is the official language of Latvia, and although Latvian is not one of the widest used languages there are still many possibilities to learn it. In general, learning a new language can be challenging, but everyone must start somewhere. In this article, we will look at the very first phrases people usually learn in a new language. Knowing these few words will help you to take the first steps in communicating with locals whether it’s in a shop, on public transport, at university, or anywhere else. Attempting to speak in Latvian during your mobility will improve your cultural experience, communicate with locals, make the experiences simpler, increase your confidence, and demonstrate respect for Latvian culture. Here are some of the very basic most helpful words and phrases in Latvian that will aid you in your learning process: 

Sveiki! - Hello! 

This is a straightforward and cordial Latvian greeting. It is adaptable to any circumstance and suitable for both formal and casual settings. 

Labdien! - Good afternoon! 

When meeting someone in the afternoon, this phrase is frequently used. It is appropriate for both professional and casual settings. 

Labrīt! - Good morning! 

 "Labrīt" is the perfect phrase for how you can greet anyone in the first half of the day.  It can be used in both formal and informal situations. 

Labvakar! - Good evening! 

If you arrive at an evening event this is the phrase you should be using. As you might have noticed that in winter it’s getting dark quite early, so typically you can start using the phrase as soon as it gets dark outside.  It's a polite way to end a conversation or say farewell. 

Paldies! - Thank you! 

Saying "Paldies" is a great way to express gratitude and show appreciation. It can be used in any situation, formal or informal. 

Lūdzu! - Please! 

This expression is frequently used to request something nicely. It's an easy method to treat people with respect and compassion. 

Atvainojiet! - Excuse me! 

"Atvainojiet" is the appropriate word to use to draw someone's attention or offer an apology. It's a kind way to interrupt or beg for pardon. 

Man vajag palīdzību. - I need help. 

If you need assistance with something, "Man vajag palīdzību" is the right phrase to use. It's a straightforward way to ask for help. 

Cik tas maksā? - How much does it cost? 

When shopping "Cik tas maksā?" is the perfect phrase to use. It's a simple way to ask for the price of something. Be aware, that it’s not common to bargain in Latvia, if the price is written down - stick to it.
