Slovakia is a land of awe-inspiring natural wonders and iconic landmarks that are a must-visit for any traveller. Whether you're an adventure seeker or a history buff, Slovakia has something for everyone. Let's take a closer look at some of the most iconic places in Slovakia that you don't want to miss.
Štrbské pleso
Štrbské pleso, the glacial lake with crystal-clear water, is one of the gateways to High Tatras, the highest mountain range in Slovakia. The scenery with the lake, peaks, rowing boats and hotel building is one of the most iconic in Slovakia. The lake is situated at an elevation of 1,346 metres above sea level and is easily accessible by car or public transport, with regular bus and train services to the nearby town of Štrba. This makes it one of the most visited destinations in Slovakia. During the summer months, visitors can go hiking on the numerous trails that surround the lake, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. One of the most popular hikes is the trail to Rysy peak that straddles the border between Slovakia and Poland. For those who prefer more relaxed hikes, the lake itself offers scenic walks and boat rides. During the winter months, the Štrbské pleso area transforms into a winter wonderland with perfect conditions for various winter sports.

Bojnice Castle
This fairytale-like castle is located in central Slovakia near the town of Prievidza and it is one of the most visited castles in Central Europe. The first written record of the castle dates back to 1113. Originally, it was a wooden castle but in the 13th century, it was rebuilt in stone. In the early 20th century, the castle was renovated in a neo-gothic style. What makes the castle unique is also a natural travertine cave with a diameter of 22 m and a height of 6 m. It is located 26 metres below the level of the 4th courtyard and probably served as a shelter in times of danger. Integral part of the area is also the castle park with the majestic linden tree known as King Matthew’s Linden, planted in 1301.

Tomášovský výhľad
Tomášovský výhľad is a breathtaking viewpoint located above Hornád river on the northern edge of the Slovak Paradise National Park. It offers stunning views on surrounding valleys and if there are good weather conditions, the High Tatras are visible as well. The place is not difficult to reach, it requires only a 40 minute hike at a leisurely pace. This terraced rock outcrop is rightfully one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Slovakia. If you are not afraid of heights, it is a must-visit destination if you happen to be in Eastern Slovakia.

Calvary in Banská Štiavnica
Calvary in Banská Štiavnica is a stunning site located in the historic mining town of Banská Štiavnica, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The baroque calvary complex was finished in 1744 and sits on the top of the Scharffenberg hill and offers spectacular views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The Calvary area is freely accessible all year round and it is a popular place for walks. To enjoy the amazing views, you do not even need to climb to the top, the walk from Hájik through rounded hills leading to Calvary is a breathtaking experience itself, offering views of Low Tatras mountain range.

Dražovce Church
Dražovce church, also called the Church of St. Michael the Archangel from the 11th century, is the oldest Romanesque church in Slovakia. It is located in Dražovce, a part of Nitra city. The church stands near the high limestone cliff in the westernmost part of the Tribeč Mountains. The simplicity of the building and its location makes it a very photogenic spot. The best views are from the cliff edges where people love to watch sunsets. The location is very easily accessible by foot from Dražovce. The church is not open and if you want to see its interiors, you have to arrange a visit in advance.
