Summer is the season of vibrant and joyous energy and carefree state of mind. What things or activities are inseparably linked to this beloved season in Slovakia? Let’s explore the Slovak summer essentials together!

Opekačka (Roasting on a Campfire)

There is no proper summer without having at least one opekačka, an outdoor campfire gathering. And during opekačka, people roast a special sausage called špekačka (pronounced "shpekachka"). Špekačka is typically made from a mixture of ground pork and beef, seasoned with various spices such as salt, pepper, garlic, and marjoram. It is then stuffed into natural casings. Špekačka is usually thicker and shorter than other types of sausages. You can prepare your špekačka by putting it on a long wooden stick or a skewer and roasting it over an open flame until ready (be careful not to drop it). Well roasted Špekačka is typically enjoyed with fresh bread and accompanied by mustard or ketchup.

Langoš, the Ultimate Beach Snack

Langoš is originally Hungarian food, but it has become an integral and iconic part of Slovak cuisine. You can be sure that if you go to sunbathe by a lake, some of the food stalls there will have langoš in their offer. Langoš is typically round or oval in shape, resembling a flatbread. The dough for langoš is made from a mixture of flour, yeast, water, and sometimes milk, resulting in a soft and elastic consistency. Traditionally, it is deep-fried until it becomes golden brown and crispy on the outside, while remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. It is usually served hot and fresh from the fryer. Common toppings include grated cheese, garlic sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise or sour cream. Langoš is a very filling (and greasy) snack so you can eat it also as a meal.

The Czechoslovak Cola Drink

One of the most popular beverages (not only in summer) is the cola drink that originated in Czechoslovakia during the communist era as an alternative to Western cola beverages which were not available in the country at the time. It has since become an iconic and beloved beverage in both countries. The drink is made from a unique blend of herbs, spices, and natural flavours, giving it a distinct taste that sets it apart from traditional cola beverages. It is a true cultural symbol and it is widely available (usually on tap) in restaurants, bars, cafes, and grocery stores throughout both countries.
