See the foliage in the Carpathians ⛰
I suggest starting your fall adventures around Romania in the Carpathian Mountains, more specifically Retezat National Park or Piatra Craiului National Park. Imagine a landscape painted in rich reds and vibrant yellows, and this is what you can expect to find in the Carpathians. Grab your hiking boots, some snacks, and hit the trails.

Celebrate Halloween at the Bran Castle!
Even though the Halloween culture is not as big as overseas, Romanian people will not miss an occasion to party, and Bran Castle is the place to go!
Located in the beautiful region of Transylvania, the famous Dracula Castle will leave you speechless. Although often associated with Bram Stoker's fictional character, Count Dracula, Bran Castle is a lot more than that. When exploring the interior, you will be transported back in time, wandering through narrow corridors and hidden chambers.
Nevertheless, the spooks and thrills are guaranteed! Here is where you can find more information about Halloween at Bran Castle.

Go café-hopping around Bucharest ☕
My favourite thing to do during the fall season is to spend hours in a cozy café with a good book and some hot beverage. If it’s pumpkin-flavoured, even better! Here are, in my opinion, some of the coziest cafés in Bucharest: Cafelier Atelier, Beans&Dots, Grand Café Van Gogh, FORMA Coffeeshop & Art Gallery.
Indulge in delicious Romanian food
Fall in Romania brings lots of seasonal foods. Try polenta (mămăligă) and cabbage rolls (sarmale). For dessert, try some papanasi (doughnuts filled with sour cream and jelly) and pumpkin pie, my favourite fall treat! If you need more inspiration on what Romanian food to try, you can read this blog post.
Admire the beautiful Danube Delta
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is where the Danube River meets the Black Sea, creating a paradise with such diverse flora and fauna. During autumn, the reeds and colourful trees surrounding the water create a magical reflection. Take a boat tour to get up close to the diverse birdlife and wildlife, including pelicans, cormorants, and so much more.
Embark on an Epic Transfagarasan Road Trip
Calling all road trip enthusiasts! Romania's Transfagarasan Highway offers some of the country's most breathtaking views, especially during the fall season. Stop at Balea Lake and take a cable car ride to Balea Waterfall for panoramic views that will leave you breathless.
So, there you have it, a list of the best things to do in Romania during autumn. Whether you're a thrill seeker, foodie, outdoor, or culture enthusiast, Romania offers a fall experience that you won’t soon forget. So, pack your bags, throw in a scarf, and get ready to fall in love with Romania all over again. Happy fall exploring!
