In this series, we will look at different music styles from Malta.
Malta may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of contemporary music. However, the Maltese music scene has been thriving in recent years, with a variety of talented artists and bands making waves both locally and internationally. In this article, we will explore some of the most notable contemporary Maltese musicians and bands, their music, and their impact on the local and scene.
We are particularly focusing on artists who sing in Maltese, to get a feel for the language in music.
The Travellers
The Travellers are a Maltese band who blend traditional pop music with modern folk rock. The band was formed in 2013 and has since gained a significant following in Malta with their lively rhythms, catchy melodies, and lyrics that often touch on themes of love, life, and social issues.
They released the irresistibly fun "Ħafi, Paċi, Kuluri" (Barefoot, Peace, Colours) and other locally well-known songs. They have since released other singles and 3 albums. This track is from the album "L-Imħabba L-Kbira," (The Big Love) released in 2020. The band has also performed at various festivals and events around Malta and Europe, including the Malta edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 (although, unfortunately, they didn't make the cut for the Eurovision itself) and the National Folk Festival in Australia.

Brikkuni
Brikkuni are the stalwarts of the underground scene who have become household names, because of their politically charged lyrics and their unique blend of singer-songwriter music, indie and electronic music. The band was formed in 2008 by frontman Mario Vella and has since released several albums and EPs that have garnered critical acclaim.
Brikkuni's music strongly reflects the social and political climate in Malta. They managed to build a loyal following both in Malta and internationally, and their music continues to resonate with audiences who are looking for music that is both socially relevant and musically engaging.
Other than social and political, themes of love and heartbreak are also explored extensively - as with this track dedicated to his late father.

Joon
Yasmin Kuymizakis, previously recording as YEWS is now Joon. Her music is characterized by soulful vocals, introspective and quirky lyrics, and a mix of pop, R&B, and electronic influences.
Joon has released several singles and EPs to date, and she has performed at various festivals and events around Malta and Europe.
Her music has been increasing in popularity... but not just locally. Signed to a well-respected label, she has been touring the U.S. with American synth-pop band Future Islands.

Kym Pepe
If Malta had a Bjork, Kym would be it. She is a singer-songwriter who writes and performs in both Maltese and English, but particularly the former. Her music blends elements of electronic, pop, and rock to create a unique sound that is both catchy and thought-provoking. Pepe's lyrics often explore themes of love, loss, and identity, and her soulful voice has a raw power that resonates with listeners.
Haunting yet quirky ballads showcase Pepe's emotive vocals and evocative lyrics. It has become an anthem for young people in Malta who are struggling to find their place in the world, and has helped to establish Pepe as one of the most exciting new voices in Maltese music.
This track, "Zoltan", is about transforming into one of her cats.

Michael Azzopardi
Another increasingly popular Maltese musician is Michael Azzopardi. who is known for his eclectic blend of electronic and acoustic music. Azzopardi's music is influenced by his background in classical piano, but he also incorporates elements of jazz, rock, and world music into his compositions. Having debuted his first EP, "Pistola" in February 2021, Michael's songs present an intimate and varied arrangement with emotionally charged and often vulnerable lyrics.
One of Azzopardi's most popular tracks is "Pjaneta Promettenti", which features not only a hypnotic electronic pulse, but also a very 'planetary' video.
