Bulgarian embroideries are part of Bulgarian culture and traditions. They store rich history, spirit, and diversity, together with a great deal of symbolism. In them, the entire creative potential, imagination, and craftsmanship of generations of Bulgarians have been invested, and we can confidently say that they have encoded information within them through forms, colors, and composition.

In the past, Bulgarian embroideries also showed the social status of a given person. Aa woman was dressed in one type of clothing, an unmarried Bulgarian woman with a different one from a married woman, or from one with children, and an adult was completely different.

Each region in Bulgaria has its own distinct style, motifs, and techniques, creating a colorful mosaic of textile artistry that continues to captivate both locals and enthusiasts worldwide. Below are the five main regions:

THRACE REGION (SOUTH BULGARIA)
In the southern part of Bulgaria lies the region of Thrace, characterized by its bright colors and geometric motifs in its embroidery. Different types of folk costumes are found here, and diversity is strongly expressed in women's costumes. It is clothed with a white cotton shirt, with various ornaments. The men's black dress costume consists of a white cotton shirt, again richly ornamented with the typical embroidery, dark coats, and a richly decorated waistcoat. In the places of the Rose Valley, the traditional kalpak is richly decorated with roses and other flowers. The Thracian embroidery used is one of the most common.

PIRIN REGION (WESTERN BULGARIA)
The Pirin region is the smallest one. Its’ embroideries are known for their delicate elegance and floral motifs. Here the colors are soft, and pastel. The designs are inspired by flowers like roses, lilies, and others.

RHODOPE REGION (SOUTHERN BULGARIA):
In the Rhodope Mountains, embroideries are saturated with symbolism and protective motifs. These embroideries often include symbols such as "shepherd's horn" and "martenitsa" (recall yourself what martenitsa is with this article). The colors are dark and earthy, emphasizing the connection with strong spirituality and local culture.

SHOP REGION (CENTRAL-WESTERN BULGARIA)
In the Shop region, embroideries are characterized by their symmetrical and detailed designs. Traditional motifs such as dancers, animals, and country houses stand out in these embroideries.

STRANDZHA REGION (SOUTHWESTERN BULGARIA)
Embroideries in the Strandzha region are distinguished by organic motifs and ancient symbolism. The designs are inspired by nature and include elements such as leaves, vines, and animals.

These are just part of the regions in Bulgaria with typical embroideries. Each region has its own unique identity and style in this curious ancient form of expression.
