Hey, community!
With 2024 just around the corner, I want to present to you some of the New Year's traditions that we have in Romania.
First of all, we start the day with the masked dances (Plugusorul/ The plowman or Capra/ The Goat), that you can read more about in this blog post about winter traditions.
In the evening, we all gather around the table for a traditional dinner, or we go party. Fun fact: Romanians like to dress up fancy, even if we get together at someone's house.
After the clock strikes midnight, we play “Sorcova”, a tradition that involves an incantation of good luck. It is a poem that is supposed to bring good luck and a prosperous year, usually sung by children who expect to get sweets or money in return. "Sorcova" is the object: a stick decorated with artificial flowers and different accessories in crazy colors.
Now, I would love to hear all about the New Year's traditions in your country! Let me know in the comments below.
Happy New Year,
Roxana, OLS Community Manager - Romanian
