New Year's resolutions—we've all made them, broken them, and even forgotten about them by February. Among the most popular resolutions that Romanian people make every year are to enjoy life more, to travel more, to practice self-care, to exercise more, to read more books, to spend more time with their family, and save more money.

This year let's ditch the pressure and embark on a journey to make those resolutions stick. Here's a seven steps process, that I applied myself over the years, on how to achieve your New Year’s resolutions in 2024.

1.     Be optimistic, but keep it realistic

I know you can achieve more than you think but a good tip is to be realistic about your time, energy, and resources. Life can throw curveballs, so be flexible in adapting your resolutions as needed. There is this quote of Bill Gates that I really like: ”Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”

So, set your goals with the intention to build on them over the years.

2.     Set actionable steps

Focus on small, achievable goals that you can incorporate in your daily life. Break your big goals into smaller, achievable steps. If your goal is to exercise more; maybe start with walking more or going to the gym two times a week instead of one. Small victories add up!

3.     Choose resolutions that make you happy

Pick goals that genuinely make you excited. Whether it's learning a new hobby, traveling to a dream destination, or simply finding more time for self-care, make sure your resolutions spark joy. When you're genuinely passionate, motivation comes naturally.

4.     Get a resolutions buddy

Find a friend of family member to keep you accountable! Having someone to share this journey with will be better than on your own. Let’s say that your goal is learning Romanian. Practice by using the comment sections of the forums to chat with other member of the OLS Romanian community!

5.     Set quarterly instead of yearly goals

Instead of having a big goal that you might forget about by the end of 2024, try to set short-term goals for 3 months or so. This way, you will be more prone to stick to them!

 6.     Visualize your goals

I think you are familiar with the concept of making a vision board. It’s such a fun process! You only need a big piece of paper and some images that depict your goals. You can either get your inspiration from the social media or cut old magazines. Invite your friends over and make your boards together, and even present them at the end. It has been proved that visualising and talking about your goals are the first steps for manifestation and achieving them.

7.     Don’t be too harsh on yourself

Finally, remember that your only competition is yourself. Treat yourself kindly and don’t take setbacks as failure, but an opportunity to readjust your goals. Resolutions are a marathon, not a sprint.

Resolutions are about growth, not perfection. So, pick goals that spark joy, surround yourself with people who inspire and lift you, and don’t forget to celebrate the wins – big and small. You've got this!

What are your goals for 2024? Let’s get inspiration from each other in this discussion topic in the Practice your Romanian forum.

See you on the forums!
