On the 5th and 6th of February, a two-day high-level conference is taking place at the Congress Centre Brdo near Kranj: the Global Forum on Ethics in Artificial Intelligence, organized by the Slovenian Ministry of Digital Transformation in collaboration with UNESCO.
The central focus is directed towards the goals and actions in the development of artificial intelligence that contribute to the greater good and help improve the quality of life for all. The Global Forum, which is the second of its kind (the first took place in December 2022 in Prague), is attended by around 500 representatives from governments, international organizations, state institutions, academia, research, non-governmental organizations, and companies from around the world.
Participants discuss the many benefits as well as risks and harms associated with artificial intelligence, appropriate safeguards and methods of regulating the use of artificial intelligence, optimal regulations at national, regional, and global levels, the role of artificial intelligence in the process of inclusive digital transformation and development that benefits all, sustainable advancement of societies and economies, best practices, and more.
The first official day of the Global Forum began with a meeting at the ministerial and international organization leader level. An increasing number of countries are adopting various measures related to artificial intelligence, and as new models emerge, participants will exchange knowledge and experiences in seeking solutions and transforming ethical principles into actionable policies, as proposed by UNESCO in the Recommendations on Ethics in Artificial Intelligence, the first such global set of measures to assist countries, which was unanimously adopted by UNESCO's 193 member states in November 2021.
More than a thousand various initiatives related to artificial intelligence from 69 countries indicate that the need for regulation of the use of artificial intelligence based on ethical principles is urgent.
The second day of the Global Forum is dedicated to expert discussions on how to ensure that everyone can effectively harness the potential of artificial intelligence, best practices and frameworks for efficient management of artificial intelligence, UNESCO's Network of Experts on Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Without Borders, integrating ethical artificial intelligence into businesses, how artificial intelligence can be used in the judiciary, eliminating gender stereotypes through the UNESCO Women4Ethical AI platform, protecting freedom of expression and access to information, and developing criteria for the development of inclusive artificial intelligence.
