Many European cities have legends and mysterious protagonists that ignite our imagination: Let’s admit, those stories aren’t just for kids. Oftentimes, adults love them even more!

Today, I’m here with the tale of Vilnius and the Iron Wolf, the symbol of our city. Although Vilnius and Lithuania have many tales and legends, this story is among the most popular. So let’s go.

Long ago, in the 14th century, Grand Duke Gediminas hunted in the dense forests near the Vilnia River.  After a successful day of hunting, Gediminas settled down in the forest and drifted into a deep sleep. That night, a vivid and strange dream visited him. In it, a massive wolf made of iron stood atop a hill, its howl echoing with such force that it seemed to fill the entire valley below.

After waking up, Gediminas was haunted by the vision. Seeking wisdom, he turned to Lizdeika, a pagan priest revered for his insight. Lizdeika interpreted the dream as a divine sign. He told Gediminas that the dream foretold of a city that must be built on the very spot where the iron wolf stood—a city that would be as enduring and well-heard as the beast in his vision.

Motivated by Lizdeika's words, Gediminas laid the foundations for Vilnius. The city grew into a vibrant capital, as strong and renowned as the prophesied iron wolf.

This is how the city was founded. It was named Vilnius after the name of the Vilnia River. Later, Gediminas moved from Trakai to Vilnius, which became Lithuania's capital.

Nowadays, The Iron Wolf is a guardian of the city’s spirit, symbolizing the indomitable will that has propelled Vilnius through centuries. Folklore experts see this iron wolf, much like the wolves in stories from the Balkans, China, and Mongolia, as a totem marking the beginning of a new family or community. Unlike the fearsome grey wolf of our tales, often linked with evil and a monstrous threat to engulf the world, the iron wolf represents bravery, power, intelligence, and determination. This is why, starting from Lithuanian independence (1918), the "Iron Wolf" name has been given to Lithuanian armed forces and their elite units, underlining its significance.
