Today, May 9, marks Europe Day, which celebrates the significant declaration by Robert Schuman in 1950.

Serving as the French Foreign Minister at that time, Schuman suggested the establishment of a European entity dedicated to overseeing the production of coal and steel, aimed at promoting economic collaboration and diminishing the likelihood of conflicts among European nations.
This proposal was presented at the Salon de l’Horloge of the French Foreign Ministry, setting the groundwork for what would become the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the inaugural supranational European body.
"Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity." – Robert Schuman, 9 May 1950
Subsequently, on 18 April 1951, delegates from France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg signed the Treaty of Paris, officially forming the ECSC. Eventually, this organization morphed into the European Economic Community and later the European Union, now comprising 27 member countries.
In honor of Europe Day, numerous EU institutions welcome the public for tours, and local EU offices host a variety of activities and events designed for people of all ages. These events offer citizens a chance to gain deeper insights into the EU, its institutions, and its core principles.
