Dear Community,

On May 24, we celebrate the Day of the brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature.

On this date, the creation of the Glagolitic script by the brothers Cyril and Methodius is celebrated in Bulgaria. The two brothers translated from Greek into Old Bulgarian some of the most necessary books of the 9th century. With this, the foundations of the Old Bulgarian literary language were laid.

The Cyril and Methodius work was preserved and continued by their students - Clement, Nahum, Sava, Gorazd and Angelarius.

The Cyrillic alphabet was created at the end of the 9th century in the Preslav Literary School, and today it is used by a number of Slavic peoples, as well as some non-Slavic ones. Among its users, along with Bulgaria, are Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Ukraine, Russia, as well as Bashkiria, Belarus, Buryatia, Dagestan, Ingushetia, the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Mari Republic, Mongolia, The Republic of Mordovia, Tatarstan, Tuva, Tajikistan, the Udmurt Republic, Chechnya, the Chuvash Republic - about 252 million people worldwide.

In the capital Sofia, on today's holiday, the traditional procession is taking place in the centre of the city. The holiday is celebrated throughout the country with processions and celebrations. There will be festive events in Plovdiv, Burgas, Sliven, Veliko Tarnovo and other cities.
