Your Guide to Joining the Local Community on Erasmus

Going on Erasmus is a unique experience for everyone. You get to meet people from all over the world, make lifelong friendships, and have a taste of how to live independently. But one of the most rewarding parts of this journey is becoming an active local community member. It's always great when we get to know the community, we're a part of and are curious to learn more about it. Sometimes, it can seem complicated and distant, especially because of the language barrier, but today I want to help you with that.

Here’s a fun and easy guide to help you blend in, make friends, and feel at home in your new surroundings.

1. Say Hello and Smile!

The simplest way to start making connections is by being approachable. A smile and a friendly “Olá” can break the ice and open the door to new friendships. Don’t be shy to greet your neighbours, classmates, teachers or the barista at your local café.

2. Get a Buddy

If you haven't arrived in Portugal yet and have many questions about the city, university, etc., you can always talk to me and the Portuguese Community at OLS. Another great option is to have a Portuguese buddy, meaning a student who has been in Portugal for a longer time or who was born in Portugal. This way, you can practice the Portuguese language and ask more specific questions. Usually, universities have a buddy program.

 3. Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and meet new people. Look for opportunities at universities, community centers, or non-profit organizations. You can make a difference while studying abroad.

4. Attend Local Events and Festivals

Immerse yourself in the local culture by attending events and festivals. These events are perfect for experiencing the traditions and customs of Portugal. Plus, they’re a lot of fun! Keep an eye on the local events calendar, I often publish some of the events here in the community!

5. Learn the Language

Making an effort to learn the local language can go a long way in connecting with the community. Even if you’re not fluent, simple phrases and greetings can show respect and openness. A simple “Olá” or “Como está hoje?” can be the start of a good conversation. Also, the OLS Portuguese Community and I are here to help you practise and improve your language skills. Find out more about the courses and forums here.

6. Explore Your Neighbourhood

Take time to explore your new neighbourhood. Visit local markets, cafes, parks and get lost in the streets. The more you explore, the more comfortable you’ll become in your new environment.

7. Share Your Culture

Don’t forget to share your own culture with others. Talk about your language, cook a traditional dish, teach a traditional dance. This cultural exchange is important for connecting people and making new friends.
