We all know Portugal's famous cities like Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, and Aveiro, as well as the stunning islands of the Azores and Madeira, but Portugal has so much more to offer. From the mountains in the north to the cliffs of the Algarve, there’s something for every taste and difficulty level. In this article, we’ll explore some of the best hiking trails Portugal has to offer.
Rota Vicentina (Alentejo and Algarve)
Rota Vicentina is one of Portugal’s most famous trails, running along the southwestern coast. It’s divided into two main parts: the "Historical Way" and the "Fishermen’s Trail." The entire route covers around 450 km, but you can choose to walk specific sections depending on your time and energy.
Serra da Peneda (Peneda-Gerês National Park)
Peneda-Gerês National Park is a paradise for those who love adventure and want to escape from routine! This trail takes you through mountains, forests, and villages rich in Portuguese culture. If you take this hike, don’t forget to visit the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda.
Vereda do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo (Madeira)
The hike from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is one of the most spectacular on the island of Madeira, connecting the two highest points on the island. When you reach Pico Ruivo, the highest point on the island at 1,862 metres, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most stunning views in Portugal.
Serra da Arrábida (Setúbal)
Serra da Arrábida is located just a few kilometres from Lisbon. This natural park is known for its vegetation and white sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters. There are a lot of trails in Arrábida, but one of the most popular is the one that takes you to the top of the mountain, where you can see panoramic views of the Tróia Peninsula and the ocean. This is one of the easiest hikes on this list, making it a perfect plan for a weekend! Put it in your calendar as it's a great activity to do with your friends.
Pico (Azores)
Did you know that Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal? This trail is one of the most challenging, but it’s something you should have on your list if you’re studying in the Azores or visiting the island! Climbing to the top of Pico requires physical strength and experience in hiking at high altitude, navigation skills, and attention to weather conditions.
Before planning your hikes, remember to check the weather conditions, especially in mountainous areas. Wear appropriate footwear, bring water and snacks for the day, and don’t forget sunscreen. Most of these areas are protected, so respect nature and always follow the marked trails!
We've come to the end of this little guide to help you connect with nature during your time in Portugal! Choose your trail and, most importantly, have fun!
