Knowledge Day in Latvia
In Latvia, September 1st is also known as The Knowledge Day. This day is the official beginning of the academic year when students and pupils return to their school desks and universities after the long summer holidays. So higher education institutions will open their doors to welcome students for the new academic year. If September 1st falls on a weekend, the new academic year will start on the next working day, like September 2nd or 3rd. This year, September 1st falls on Sunday so the first day of school will be on Monday, September 2nd.
Pupils and students usually prepare flowers for the first day of school, as a gift to their teachers for the time and energy they dedicate to teaching. In Latvia, Knowledge Day is celebrated with different events for students, teachers, and parents. Teachers, students, and pupils are found in almost every family, so this is an important celebration for all Latvians. Cities become livelier, with more cars on the roads and many people rushing to complete tasks before the new school year begins.
Knowledge Day typically starts with a formal ceremony at educational institutions. University students traditionally gather to listen to greetings by the rector and other academic staff members. Depending on the university, these ceremonies usually take place either in the university courtyard or in the largest auditorium. I encourage you to check beforehand where your university's celebrations will be held.
In almost every city, events are organized to mark the beginning of the new academic year. For students, this might mean parties, while for schoolchildren and teachers, it often means concerts, theater performances, or other cultural events. Parents and other family members frequently participate in these activities to support their children and friends.
Knowledge Day is a special moment when everyone gets ready for the challenges and joys of the new school year. Make sure to find information on what your university has planned for the Knowledge Day celebrations—it’s a great opportunity to meet and get to know your coursemates and other university students, not to mention start the year with new friendships.
I wish you joyful celebrations and a knowledge-filled new academic year!
