Victory Day, celebrated on September 8th, is a significant public holiday in Malta, known locally as "Il-Vittorja." This day marks the end of three historical events where Malta triumphed against great odds: the Great Siege of 1565, the lifting of the French blockade in 1800, and the end of World War II in 1943.
The Great Siege of 1565 was a pivotal moment in Maltese history, when the Knights of St. John and the Maltese people defended the island against the Ottoman Empire.
In 1800, the Maltese, with British assistance, successfully expelled the French forces, marking the beginning of British rule in Malta.
There's also another event which falls under the umbrella of this celebration, one that gave Malta the George Cross which it proudly still dawns on it flag to this day. But can you tell us what this event was?
