Every year, on September 26, we celebrate the European Day of Languages, which has become a symbol of linguistic diversity and the importance of language education in Europe. This day provides an opportunity for millions of people across the continent to reflect on the significance of learning foreign languages while also recognizing the crucial contribution that linguistic diversity makes to our culture, society, and economy.

The Aim of the European Day of Languages

The main goal of the European Day of Languages is to highlight linguistic diversity, which represents one of Europe’s greatest treasures. More than 200 languages are spoken in Europe, including 24 official languages of the European Union. It is estimated that there are about 7,000 languages in the world, many of which are at risk of extinction.

The day aims to promote:

  • Language learning throughout life: Language education is not only for children and young people, but it is also important for adults and seniors. The European Day of Languages reminds us that it is never too late to start learning a new language.

  • Linguistic inclusion and equality: Supporting smaller and less-used languages is essential for maintaining cultural diversity in Europe. Various minority languages, such as Irish, Basque, and Catalan, have their irreplaceable place within our cultural heritage.

  • Intercultural understanding: Languages bring people together, build bridges between nations, and contribute to intercultural dialogue. In this way, they help prevent misunderstandings and improve cooperation between countries.

Slovakia and the European Day of Languages

Slovakia is a country with a rich history and diverse linguistic culture. Our geographical location in the heart of Europe allows us to be in contact with various nations and languages. Foreign language education is an integral part of the school curriculum in Slovakia, with the greatest emphasis placed on English, German, and French.

On the occasion of the European Day of Languages, various events are held annually in Slovakia to promote language learning. We can look forward to language workshops, lectures, and interactive activities for students, teachers, and the general public. This day offers opportunities not only for school children but also for professionals to improve their language skills and better understand the cultures of their neighbors.

The Importance of Foreign Language Skills

In today’s globalized world, the ability to communicate in a foreign language has become one of the most important skills an individual can acquire. Proficiency in multiple languages opens doors to better job opportunities, boosts self-confidence, and enables a deeper understanding of foreign cultures.

In Slovakia, there is a high demand for people with language skills. It’s not just about traditional languages like English and German. There is also growing interest in less common languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and others. Many companies and organizations need employees who can communicate with business partners around the world.

How Does the European Day of Languages Support Language Education?

The European Day of Languages is an initiative that emphasizes the promotion of lifelong language learning. Organized events, competitions, and discussions on the topic motivate people to learn new languages and encourage schools, educational institutions, and employers to invest in the development of language skills.

One of the modern tools that support language education is the Online Linguistic Support (OLS) for students participating in the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps programs. Slovak students who take part in study exchanges or internships abroad have access to free online courses that allow them to improve their proficiency in the language of the country they are visiting. OLS helps thousands of students gain the language skills needed for successful adaptation in a foreign country, while also supporting the long-term development of language education.

How to Get Involved in the Celebration of the European Day of Languages?

This year, several events will be organized in Slovakia to mark the European Day of Languages. Schools, universities, cultural institutions, and educational centers will offer various activities, such as language courses, discussions on linguistic diversity, lectures on translation and interpretation, and many other events.

Students and language enthusiasts will have the opportunity to participate in both online and physical meetings, where they can acquire new knowledge, meet people from different parts of Europe, and learn more about the importance of languages in everyday life.

OLS is also hosting an OLS Open Day as part of the European Day of Languages event, where you can meet all the OLS managers from European countries (including me), participate in various competitions, and learn a lot of new and interesting information!

Language as a Bridge Between Cultures

Languages have the power to connect people and open up new perspectives. The European Day of Languages reminds us that learning foreign languages is not just about grammar and vocabulary, but about understanding the cultures, traditions, and ways of thinking of other nations. With each new language we learn, we not only acquire new skills but also the ability to better understand the world around us.

Slovakia, as part of Europe, plays an important role in preserving this diversity and supports language education at all levels. That is why it is important to remind ourselves on the European Day of Languages of the value and significance of languages in our daily lives and to continuously strive to expand our language abilities.
