Hello community!

Since 2001, the European Commission and the Council of Europe have celebrated the European Day of Languages (EDL) on September 26. This observance aims to raise awareness of Europe's linguistic diversity, advocate for cultural heritage and diversity, encourage language learning, and promote translation, interpretation, and other language-related professions.

Multilingualism is one of the European Union's (EU) founding principles and an essential element of Europe's cultural identity. The EU alone has 24 official languages, and it's estimated that more than 225 indigenous languages are spoken across the continent.

Nurturing knowledge of European languages helps develop successful connections between different linguistic groups, promotes intercultural understanding, and fosters more tolerant and empathetic societies. Additionally, speaking multiple languages increases your chances of starting a career in another EU country. Isn't that appealing?

At OLS, you can access courses and materials to learn up to 29 European languages! Throughout September and October, the European Union has organised numerous events for you to participate in. Check out the list of activities HERE to see what is happening around you, and join the EDL 2024 celebrations!

Ways the European Day of Languages is Celebrated in Sweden

  1. Language Workshops and Classes: Many schools, universities, and language institutions offer free language workshops and taster sessions in various languages. These activities encourage people to learn new languages or improve their existing skills. Schools might incorporate special lessons about different European languages and cultures.
  2. Cultural Events: Various cultural events are held to celebrate the diversity of languages. This can include film screenings, poetry readings, and theatrical performances in different languages, highlighting how language influences culture.
  3. Language Quizzes and Competitions: Schools and educational organisations often organise language quizzes, both online and in-person, to test knowledge about different European languages, cultures, and geography. Language-related competitions also encourage students and the public to engage with multiple languages.
  4. Lectures and Seminars: Universities and cultural centres may hold seminars, lectures, or panel discussions on the importance of language learning, multilingualism, and cultural exchange. These can cover topics like the benefits of learning multiple languages or the role of languages in promoting intercultural dialogue.
  5. Media Campaigns and Social Media: Swedish media, including radio, TV, and social media, often highlights the European Day of Languages through special programs, interviews, and articles on language learning and linguistic diversity. Schools and organisations use hashtags and digital platforms to spread the message and celebrate the day online.
  6. Embassies and Cultural Institutes: Many embassies and cultural institutes, such as the Goethe-Institut or Alliance Française, participate in organising events that showcase the language and culture of their respective countries, offering opportunities for language learning and cultural exchange.
  7. Collaborations with Schools: Schools and educational institutions may collaborate with language organisations and the Council of Europe to host activities like language exchange programs, where students can practice speaking in different languages with their peers.

Why It’s Important in Sweden
In a country where English is widely spoken and valued, the European Day of Languages helps promote learning other languages such as French, German, Spanish, and Nordic. The celebration emphasizes multilingualism to broaden perspectives, enhance career opportunities, and strengthen European unity. It also celebrates the languages of minority communities in Sweden, such as Sami and Finnish, contributing to a richer, more inclusive society.

Happy European Day of Languages! :)
