Every year on October 29, Türkiye celebrates Republic Day, marking the day in 1923 when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk declared the foundation of the Republic of Türkiye. This national holiday is one of Türkiye’s most important days, filled with various festivities, parades, fireworks, and national pride. But Republic Day isn’t just a day of commemoration; it’s also an opportunity for citizens and international students, especially those in Erasmus programs, to immerse themselves in Turkish culture and appreciate the historical significance of the day.

In this blog post, we’ll dive into what makes October 29 such a cherished day for Turks, how Republic Day is celebrated, and how Erasmus students in Türkiye can experience and even contribute to this special occasion.

How Republic Day is Celebrated in Türkiye

On Republic Day, Turkish cities come alive with celebrations. Streets, buildings, and public spaces are decorated with the Turkish flag, images of Atatürk, and banners celebrating the Republic. Festivities include:

  1. Official Ceremonies: Public officials and citizens gather at Atatürk’s mausoleum, Anıtkabir in Ankara, to pay respects. Ceremonies also take place across the country, with wreath-laying, speeches, and patriotic performances.

  1. Parades: Major cities host military parades and processions, with Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir being particularly notable. These parades often include displays of Turkish history, traditional costumes, and artistic performances, allowing participants to immerse themselves in Turkey’s rich cultural heritage.

  1. Fireworks and Light Shows: In the evening, fireworks light up the skies over major cities. Istanbul’s Bosphorus Strait is especially famous for its spectacular fireworks and light shows, which can be seen from both the European and Asian sides of the city.

  1. Community Events: Schools, universities, and community centers organize activities and exhibitions showcasing Turkey's journey to becoming a republic, with documentaries, concerts, and student-led performances celebrating Turkish history and culture.

Republic Day Through the Eyes of Erasmus Students and ESC Volunteers

For Erasmus students and ESC volunteers, being in Türkiye during Republic Day offers an exciting opportunity to witness and participate in a unique national celebration. Through the Erasmus program, students are given the chance to explore Türkiye’s history, language, and traditions firsthand, adding depth to their educational experience.

Here are a few ways to join the festivities:

  1. Attend Local Events: Many universities hold Republic Day events, and these are open to both local and international students. Participating in these events can deepen your understanding of Turkish culture and history.

  1. Visit Historical Sites: Places like Anıtkabir in Ankara or Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul (where Atatürk spent his final days) are great destinations on Republic Day. Exploring these sites can be a powerful experience, allowing you to connect with Türkiye’s past and the legacy of Atatürk.

  1. Celebrate with Friends: If you’ve made Turkish friends, Republic Day is a wonderful time to celebrate together. Many Turks gather with family and friends, so it can be a chance to join in traditional Turkish gatherings, share food, and enjoy music.

  1. Watch the Fireworks on the Bosphorus: Istanbul’s fireworks show over the Bosphorus Strait is one of the most spectacular in the world. Head to the waterfront with friends or join a boat tour to witness the celebrations from the water—a memory that’s sure to last a lifetime.

For any Erasmus students ESC volunteers in Türkiye this year: take the opportunity to dive into the celebrations, learn more about Turkish history, and connect with locals. Republic Day in Türkiye is more than just a holiday; it’s a day to experience the spirit and resilience of a nation.
