The Most Beautiful Christmas Markets in Hungary This Year

In case, you have the time during your mobility program to travel before the holidays, don’t miss out on those cultural events, that are waiting for you in Hungary in the autumn-winter season.
Dazzling festive lights, cozy wooden huts full of goodies, vendors selling mulled wine and hot chocolate, and wonderful handicrafts: are you in the mood for a winter fair? Here are some of the best Christmas markets in Hungary this year.

This time of the year is almost there, winter markets around Europe and Hungary will start opening in November. The list includes the most popular Hungarian fairs, in and near the capital, Budapest, but also around the country.

What could be a better winter experience during your mobility program than visiting the local winter markets with all the lights, decorations, handcrafted products, live music, and festivities? You don’t even have to travel far; you’re right here, where we have dozens of amazing winter fairs around the country.
Budapest

Budapest's Christmas markets are often on the list of Europe's best winter events. The capital's most spectacular and famous fair is held every year at the Basilica. The event features well over 100 exhibitors, including unique jewelers, leather goods, ceramics, and ornaments, as well as great food and drinks. Moreover, festive concerts and light painting have become a tradition at St Stephen's Square in Budapest.

The light shows concerts, handicrafts, gastronomic delights and festive atmosphere of the Vörösmarty Square fair are also as dazzling as those of the Christmas fairs in Vienna or Prague. To top it all off, if you walk into the fair via Váci Street, you'll also see one of Budapest's most extravagant Christmas lights.
For those who don't fancy the festive hustle and bustle of Vörösmarty and Szent István squares, the Óbuda Christmas market is the place to go. In the peaceful atmosphere of Fő tér, there is usually a free ice rink and great music for visitors.

The dates of the other known advent fairs in Budapest have not yet been announced.

Szentendre

Charming Szentendre is also famous for its idyllic Christmas market. The small town on the Danube, while able to impress travelers at any time of year, turns into a real Christmas fairytale land during the winter months.
The streets are filled with handicraft goods and fantastic gastronomic specialties for a few weeks during the festive season.

Date: 30 November 2024 to 7 January 2025.

Eger

The Eger event is a must-visit for gastronomy lovers, but exciting musical events are also a regular feature on Dobó Square, while beautiful lights and unique visual elements in the baroque city center take the atmosphere to another level.

Adding to the uniqueness of the Eger Advent Fair is the Advent playhouse, the Magic Ice Palace, with lots of games, story cafés, and craft workshops for all ages.

Győr

The Győr Advent Fair is one of the most atmospheric winter fairs in Central Europe. One of the fair's attractions is the Ferris wheel in Dunakapu Square, which offers a magnificent panorama of the city center and the surrounding area.
Around the attraction, as well as in the neighboring Széchenyi Square, several cozy wooden chalets are offering hot beverages, as well as sweet and savory delicacies.

The Győr Advent Fair also includes Baross út and Megyeháza Square, where you can stroll around, drink hot chocolate, or browse the vendors' wares.
Date: 29 November to 24 December 2024.

Pécs

The Christmas Market in Pécs is the perfect place for those who love a more cozy, casual atmosphere. It's not that the event isn't popular with locals, but the atmosphere is still peaceful and laid-back.
The event is held every year in Széchenyi Square in the center of the city and has several unique features that make it worth adding to your winter travel bucket list.
The XIIIth Advent Craft and Fairytale Fair will occur from 29 November to 24 December 2024 at Széchenyi Square.

Szeged

The Szeged Winter Market is not to be left out of the list of the most anticipated Hungarian festive events. The Dóm Square Fair has long been known for its impressive atmosphere, and for years the Seged Ferris wheel has been set up here, so the festive winter season in Szeged was a spectacle that surpassed that of European cities.

Date: the Szeged Winter Markets will take place between 29 November 2024 and 24 December 2023.

Debrecen

The walk-through winter fair in Debrecen can easily feel like you've just walked onto the set of a movie. It has even been selected as one of the 20 best small-scale winter fairs in Europe for 2022.
Local events are also held in Kossuth Square and Dósa Nádor Square.
The "hut" and the Kossuth Square ice-skating rink are local specialties.

The former offers delicious food and drinks, while the latter, for example, hosted a skating disco last year.

Gyöngyös

The Belváros square in Gyöngyös will be illuminated for the season. The market will feature festive lights, fundraising, concerts, hot drinks, and winter activities.
Stroll through the stalls, sipping lovely hot beverages and choosing from a selection of great gift ideas, while enjoying a series of high-quality concerts.
