Dear Community,

As for many of you, your Erasmus or European Solidarity Corps (ESC) experience comes to an end now or soon, if you have done an autumn semester, the time has come to ensure a smooth transition back home. Beyond packing your belongings, several practical and emotional considerations can help you leave on the right note.

First, address all administrative tasks. Make sure you’ve completed any paperwork required by your host institution or organization, such as obtaining certificates, finalizing your learning agreement, or deregistering with local authorities. These steps are essential for ensuring your credits and achievements are recognized back home.

Next, settle any financial matters. Close local bank accounts, cancel subscriptions, and pay off any outstanding bills. If you have leftover currency, decide whether to exchange it, save it as a memento, or keep it for future travels.

When it comes to accommodation, ensure you leave your space in good condition to recover your security deposit. Donate or sell items you no longer need and ship home anything valuable that won’t fit in your luggage.

Emotionally, saying goodbye can be challenging. Take time to express gratitude to those who made your experience memorable. Exchange contact details with friends and colleagues to maintain connections. Leaving a place that became your second home is bittersweet, but carrying those relationships forward can ease the transition.

Finally, reflect on your journey. Think about how you can use your experiences to enrich your academic or professional life. Keep a global mindset and look for ways to stay involved in international opportunities, whether through future travels, volunteering, or networking.

With a little planning and care, you can close this chapter feeling accomplished and ready for the next adventure.

How are you preparing for going home? Do you have any advice for fellow students in a mobility program, what not to forget before going home from their mobility experience? Let me know in the comments or feel free to ask your questions regarding the topic!
