Hej Allesammen!
Are you a fan of crafts or DIY projects? Let's bring some creativity into our "living abroad" experience! Denmark has a rich tradition of handmade crafts, and it's a great way to immerse yourself in the culture while practicing your Danish language skills.
Here are some ideas to inspire your Danish-themed creations:
Knit or crochet a scarf in the colors of the Danish flag (rød og hvid).
Make traditional Danish Christmas decorations like woven paper hearts (julehjerter) or candle holders.
Paint or draw scenes of Danish landscapes, like Nyhavn or the rolling hills of Jutland.
Build a small DIY hygge nook for your home, complete with candles and cozy blankets.
Try your hand at Danish embroidery or cross-stitch, incorporating traditional patterns.
Here’s a simple guide to my favourite DIY activity of making julehjerter, the classic Danish woven paper hearts often hung on Christmas trees:
Materials Needed:
Two pieces of colored paper (red and white are traditional)
Scissors
Pencil and ruler
Steps:
- Cut two rectangles of paper, each about 10x15 cm. Fold them in half lengthwise.
- Round the open ends of each rectangle into a semicircle.
- Draw 3-4 lines from the folded edge towards the rounded end, stopping short of the edge. These will be your weaving strips. Cut along the lines.
- Weave the strips together by alternating one strip over and one strip under. Continue until the two pieces form a checkered heart shape.
- Open the heart slightly to create a pocket for small treats or hang it as is!
