Hello community,

As someone who's done two mobility programmes, I know how challenging it can be to manage your budget wisely. But, this is key to making the most of your experience without financial stress. Here are some practical tips to help you stretch your lei while still enjoying your time in Romania.

1. Plan your budget in advance

Before you leave, make a rough estimate of your monthly expenses, including rent, food, transportation, and leisure activities. Having a clear idea of how much money you have to spend each month will help you avoid unnecessary stress and overspending.

2. Find affordable accommodation

Housing will likely be one of your biggest expenses, so look for budget-friendly options. University dorms, shared flats, or student housing platforms can be much cheaper than renting a private apartment. Also, connect with other Erasmus students to find roommates and split costs. Here's a blog post about finding accommodation as a student in Romania.

3. Take advantage of student discounts

Many places offer discounts for students, including museums, cinemas, public transport, and even some restaurants. Get yourself a student card (such as an ISIC card) and always ask if there’s a discount available - you’d be surprised how much you can save!

4. Cook at home

Eating out can be tempting, but cooking at home is a great way to save money. Visit local markets for fresh and affordable ingredients, and try cooking traditional dishes from Romania. Here is a blog post with some inspo: A Foodie's Guide to Living in Romania.

5. Use public transportation

Instead of relying on taxis or ride-sharing apps, make use of student transport passes, which are often cheaper for long-term use. Biking or walking can be a great (and free!) way to explore your new home, but I wouldn't rely on biking as much in Bucharest.

6. Travel smart

One of the best parts of studying abroad is travelling, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Use budget airlines, or student discounts on trains. Interrail is a great way to travel around Europe, and soon we will announce the 10 lucky winner who participated in the third edition of the OLS Video Contest and won an Interrail pass!

7. Track your spending

Keeping track of your expenses is key to staying within your budget. This will help you adjust your spending habits and avoid surprises at the end of the month.

8. Enjoy free activities

Not everything fun has to cost money! Look out for free events, festivals, student meetups, and cultural activities in your city. Many universities also organize free or low-cost activities for Erasmus students, so take advantage of them!

By following these tips, you can make the most of your Erasmus exchange while keeping your budget in check. Do you have any extra tips? Let me know in the comments!
