Sofia is a capital with many faces. At first glance, a bit messy and gray, the city actually hides numerous opportunities for culture, art and entertainment. In the small corners of the central streets, unexpected surprises lurk that can make every guest smile. 

If you are an art lover and would like to explore the world of Bulgarian artists in depth, you can head to the dozens of museums and galleries that will take you on a journey into past and present times. Below I present a few suggestions to get you started. 


National Gallery "Square 500" 

History: Opened in 2015, the gallery is also the largest art museum in the country. It is located near the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and has 28 spacious halls. 

Collections: Over 42,000 works by Bulgarian and foreign artists, including paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. The exhibition includes works representing Bulgarian art from the mid-19th century and the 20th century, European art from the 15th-20th centuries, and examples from Asia, Africa, and America. 


Sofia City Art Gallery (SGAG) 

History: Founded in 1928, the gallery has preserved the cultural heritage of Sofia and Bulgaria. 

Collections: Painting, graphics, sculpture, and photography from the late 19th century to the present day. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the gallery regularly organizes temporary exhibitions and events related to contemporary art. 


Museum of Art from the Socialist Period 

History: Opened in 2011, this museum displays art from the socialist era (1944–1989). 

Collections: Monumental sculptures, paintings and posters that reflect the ideology and style of the time. 

Interesting fact: Over 70 huge sculptures that once adorned the squares of socialist Bulgaria are exhibited outdoors. 


Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art 

History: Housed in a historic building, the museum opened its doors in 2011 and presents contemporary art from the country and abroad. 

Collections: Contemporary installations, video art, spatial compositions and digital projects.  

Interesting fact: The museum is popular for its innovative exhibitions, which often include interactive elements. 


Dechko Uzunov Gallery 

History: The house-museum was created in memory of Dechko Uzunov – one of the most famous Bulgarian artists of the 20th century. 

Collections: Paintings and drawings that demonstrate his unique style and talent. 

Interesting fact: The gallery is located in a cozy building with an atmosphere that reminds of the spirit of the artist. 


National Museum of Bulgarian Fine Arts 

History: Located in part of the former royal palace and is home to art from the Renaissance period to modernism. 

Collections: Icons, paintings, graphics and sculpture by some of the most significant Bulgarian artists. 

Interesting fact: The museum combines traditional art with a modern museum environment.
