Hello, Croatian Community!
Knowing a few cultural dos and don’ts can help you make the most of your time and connect better with locals. Here are some tips to get you started—and feel free to add your own!
Dos in Croatia
Greet with a smile and say ‘Dobar dan.’ Croatians appreciate politeness, so saying hello (or “bok” for something more casual) goes a long way.Try the local cuisine. Don’t miss out on dishes like peka, ćevapi, or fresh seafood from the Adriatic. And yes, burek is a must-try!
Tip in restaurants and cafes. While tipping isn’t mandatory, it’s customary to leave around 10% if you’re happy with the service.
Respect the coffee culture. Coffee time is sacred here! Take your time, relax, and enjoy your espresso like a local (drinking it at least for an hour while chating with friends).
Learn a few Croatian phrases. Even simple words like “Hvala” (Thank you) or “Molim” (Please) will make a great impression.
Explore small villages. The charm of Croatia lies in its hidden gems, like Motovun, Grožnjan, or even less touristy islands like Vis or Lastovo.
Respect the environment. Croatia’s natural beauty is stunning—help
keep it that way by cleaning up after yourself, especially on beaches and in
parks.
Use cash when possible. While cards are widely accepted, some
smaller establishments prefer cash, especially in coffee shops or rural areas.
Don’ts in Croatia
Don’t
assume everyone speaks English. While many people do,
especially in tourist areas, it’s always good to ask first.
Don’t rush through meals. Croatians love to take their time at the
table—enjoy the relaxed pace and savor the moment.
Don’t forget to dress appropriately. If you’re visiting religious
sites, make sure to wear modest clothing.
Don’t stick to just the coast. While the Dalmatian coastline is
stunning, don’t skip the inland gems like Plitvice Lakes, Zagreb, or Slavonia.
Don’t compare Croatia to other countries. Croatians are proud of
their history and culture, so be mindful when discussing the region.
Don’t litter on beaches or in nature. Croatians are proud of their clean environment, and leaving trash behind is frowned upon.
Don’t overpack for island hopping. If you’re planning to explore the islands, keep your luggage light to make ferry travel easier.
What about you? Have you visited Croatia or are you planning to? Share your dos and don’ts with the community—we’d love to hear your experiences!
