Blog Piece in Focus: Language Takeaway (20 Feb 2025)

In the blog piece published today, in which an Irishman is talking about his experiences with learning Serbian, a significant emphasis was put on the Serbian Cyrillic Alphabet.

As you probably know, Serbian has two alphabets: azbuka (Cyrillic) and abeceda (Latin). In brief, what we have is: same sounds, different letters, different alphabetic order.

As we will be revising Cyrillic more thoroughly in our speaking session on March 3rd, here I would just like to make a small intro: let’s take a look at

1.        the letters of the Serbian Latin alphabet that have diacritical marks,

2.        their counterparts in the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet,

3.        how they sound (the same, in both alphabets!)

Ђ ђ

I am leaving the no. 3 as an opportunity for you to choose an example of English words which contain the sounds which are, in your opinion, the most similar to the ones in Serbian listed above. Looking forward to reading your comments with the examples! (Please also note which letter/sound it is.)
