Téltemetés: How Do We Say Goodbye to Winter in Hungary?

As winter slowly fades and spring approaches, Hungary has a unique tradition to bid farewell to the cold season. One of the most interesting of these customs is the Winter Burial, or "winter's farewell". This centuries-old tradition is a mixture of folklore, superstition and joyful celebration, marking the transition from the dark, cold months to the vibrant renewal of spring.

The origin of the Winter Burial

Winter burials are deeply rooted in Hungarian folklore and closely linked to ancient folk beliefs. In the past, people saw winter as a time of darkness and hardship, while spring symbolised rebirth and renewal. To welcome the prosperous new season, communities performed rituals to ward off the cold weather.

Traditional customs and rituals

One of the best known customs of winter burial is the burning or drowning of a symbolic figure, often represented by a straw doll known as a Kisa doll. This ritual, similar to other European traditions such as the Czech Morena or the Polish Marzanna, symbolises the banishment of winter. Villagers, especially children, parade the straw doll through the streets before setting it on fire or throwing it into the river, signalling the end of winter's reign.
Another important part of the celebration is the noise-making. People make noise with bells, rattles and even whips, believing that loud sounds will ward off the spirits of winter and hasten the arrival of spring.

Where can you see a winter burial in Hungary?

Although winter burials are not as common as they once were, many towns and cultural festivals keep the tradition alive. Some of the places where you can experience these traditions:

Mohácsi Busójárás - Although primarily a carnival event, the Busójárás in Mohácsi includes many elements of the Winter Funeral, such as fancy masks and fire rituals.

Hollókő Easter Festival - The UNESCO-listed village often hosts traditional events, including end-of-winter celebrations with folk performances.

Local village festivals - Many rural communities still hold small Winter Festivals, featuring traditional music, dance and food.

Celebrating the arrival of spring

The farewell of winter is also a welcome to spring. After the Winter Burial many communities hold spring festivals with folk dancing, flower arrangements and seasonal foods such as carnival doughnuts.

Do you have similar celebrations in your country, are there folk celebrations for the winter funeral? Which Hungarian winter funeral festival would you visit? How are you looking forward to spring?
