International Women's Day, which is celebrated on March 8, is an important holiday in our society. This holiday is primarily a day when economic, political and social equality of women with men is celebrated in Serbia. On the other hand, since there is no tradition of celebrating Mother's Day in our society, March 8 is also the day when preschools and schools in Serbia prepare events and gifts for mothers, grandmothers and other important women in every child's life. If you were to ask people in Serbia when Mother's Day is celebrated, rest assured that the vast majority would have no idea, but their first association would almost certainly be March 8! In this blog, we will look at the way in which Women's Day is celebrated in Serbia, both in the public and private sectors, but also at how children in preschools and schools, together with their teachers, prepare events and gifts for their mothers.
It is an unwritten rule that on March 8, companies and enterprises organize a lunch or dinner for their employees, in a restaurant with music, with the obligatory gift of flowers for each colleague – most often a single rose or carnation. Serbs love to celebrate, but this in no way diminishes the seriousness of this holiday and its importance for society. It is also an opportunity for colleagues to socialize! It is also very festive in schools: children are taught recitations about their mother or grandmother, songs are sung, and a performance is held for mothers and grandmothers. For example, there are cases where an event is organized for grandmothers, since gifts are made for mothers in kindergarten or school in the form of greeting cards, painted canvas bags, notebooks with drawings representing the family, favorite mom and child songs, a family picture, a drawn and colored plane ticket with the destination mom would like to travel to, etc. Perhaps the most touching greeting cards are for important aunts in their lives: mom's and dad's sisters, mom's friend, an aunt from a nearby store, with the theme: Why is every aunt important to us?
In Serbia, the vast majority of women work, and juggle motherhood, marriage and a career. In this sense, March 8 is still a holiday celebrating the equality of working women with men, but it is also a day on which we celebrate the woman who is both a worker and a family woman.
