Sláinte agus Folláine (Health and Well-being)

Talking about health helps us express how we feel and discuss our physical condition. These phrases are important for everyday conversations about well-being and for situations when you might need medical assistance.

Basic Health Vocabulary

  • Sláinte (slawn-cha) = Health
  • Tinneas (chin-ass) = Illness/Sickness
  • Folláine (full-aw-na) = Well-being
  • Biseach (bish-akh) = Recovery/Improvement
  • Dochtúir (dokh-toor) = Doctor
  • Ospidéal (os-pid-ale) = Hospital
  • Cógas (koe-gas) = Medicine
  • Otharcharr (oh-har-khar) = Ambulance

Common Health Conditions

  • Slaghdán (sly-dawn) = Cold
  • Fliú (floo) = Flu
  • Tinneas cinn (chin-ass kin) = Headache

Asking About Health

  • Conas atá tú? (Kun-as a-taw too?) = How are you?
  • Conas atá do shláinte? (Kun-as a-taw duh hlawn-cha?) = How is your health?
  • An bhfuil tú go maith? (On will too guh mah?) = Are you well?
  • An bhfuil tú tinn? (On will too chin?) = Are you sick?
  • An bhfuil pian ort? (On will pee-an ort?) = Are you in pain?

Sample Health Conversation

A: Dia duit, a Sheáin. Conas atá do shláinte? (Jee-a gwitch, a Haw-in. Kun-as a-taw duh hlawn-cha?) = Hello, Seán. How is your health?

B: Níl mé go maith inniu. Tá tinneas cinn orm agus tá slaghdán orm freisin. (Neel may guh mah in-new. Taw chin-ass kin or-um ah-gus taw sly-dawn or-um fresh-in.) = I'm not well today. I have a headache and I have a cold too.

A: Tá brón orm a chloisteáil sin. Ar thóg tú aon chógas? (Taw brone or-um a khlish-tawl shin. Ar hoag too ayn khoe-gas?) = I'm sorry to hear that. Have you taken any medicine?

B: Thóg mé pionta uisce agus táim ag ligean mo scíth. (Hoag may pee-un-ta ish-ka ah-gus taw-im eg lig-an muh shkeeh.) = I've taken a pint of water and I'm resting.
