Island Hopping in Finnish Archipelago - Rengastie route Adventure

Finland has thousands of islands. It is impossible to calculate the exact number, but it is estimated that there are approximately 179,584. The high season in the Finnish archipelago is short and the sights of Archipelago Finland are at their most spectacular in the summer. Exploring the archipelago by bike is fun and the most popular cycling destinations are the Åland Islands and the Turku archipelago, where the famous Archipelago Rengastie (Ring Road) runs.

Saariston Rengastie - Archipelago Ring Road

The approximately 250-kilometer-long Archipelago Rengastie circles the Turku archipelago and the Archipelago Rengastie  can be traveled by car, bicycle or even on foot. The islands are connected to each other by about a dozen bridges and eight ferries. 9.5. – 14.9.2025.

The Archipelago RIng Road, Saariston Rengastie starts in Turku. If you travel the route counterclockwise, the towns and islands are in order: Kaarina, Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskär, Iniö, Kustavi, Taivassalo and back to Turku. It is also possible to do a longer route: Kaarina, Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskär, Roslax, Nåtö, Torsholma. Brandö, Åva, Vuosnainen, Kustavi, Taivassalo and Turku. There are many cafes, campsites and accommodation for every budget on the route. Some ferries require a ticket for the car in advance. The ferries are free for passengers but, some ferries charge a small fee for vehicles, motorcycles and cars, or bicycles.

The route is full of beautiful sights, but one of the most impressive is certainly the island of Seili in Nauvo. The historically valuable Seili served as a place of exile for the mentally ill and lepers in the 17th century. The exiles had to take planks with them to build their own coffins, as most of them never returned from the island. Another historical attraction is the medieval Church of the Holy Cross in Taivassalo. The walls of the church are decorated with paintings depicting devils and beheadings.

Pieni Rengastie - The Little Ring Road

The Pieni Rengastie, Little Ring Road is 120 km long, of which 100 km is driving and includes three ferry crossings. The Little Ring Road is a shorter version of the popular Saariston Rengastie, Archipelago Ring Road, which takes you on a scenic journey through five towns: Turku, Raisio, Naantali, Parainen and Kaarina.

The Little Ring Road can be done by car in one day or by bike in a couple of days. The recommended time for this route is 1-2 days, allowing you to enjoy the stunning views at a leisurely pace.
