Navigating Homesickness – What helps you feel at home?

Hello everyone

Living abroad can be exciting—but also challenging. Many of us, whether we’re new to Denmark or studying Danish from afar, experience homesickness at some point.

In this thread, let’s talk about it honestly:

  • What makes you feel at home when you’re far away?
  • Have you found any small rituals, places, or people that help you feel grounded?
  • Do certain routines, foods, or music help you reconnect to yourself?

Whether you’ve just arrived or have been abroad for a while, your story might help someone else feel a little less alone.

If you would like, then try using Danish words for feelings in your reply (no matter your level, feel free to mix Danish and English!)

Here are a few to get started:

  • glad – happy

  • trist – sad

  • spændt – excited

  • nervøs – nervous

  • hjemme – at home

  • ude – away / out

Eksempel:
Når jeg savner mit hjemland, føler jeg mig trist. Men når jeg laver mad fra min barndom, føler jeg mig lidt mere hjemme.

I'd love to hear how you navigate these feelings about homesickness and encourage you to write it in the comment section of this discussion as you never know when someone could use your tips or can relate to your feelings.

I look forward to reading more about what helps you feel at home!
