Every year on May 19, Türkiye lights up with the vibrant spirit of its youth, remembering a moment in history that ignited a nation's independence. Known as the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, this national holiday is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a symbol of resilience, unity, and the powerful role of young people in shaping the future.

Why May 19 Matters

On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, arrived in Samsun, marking the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence. In recognition of this pivotal moment, Atatürk dedicated this day to the youth of Türkiye, placing his trust and hope in new generations to carry forward the ideals of peace, progress, and patriotism.

From bustling city squares to quiet coastal towns, young people across Türkiye gather on this day for sports events, music performances, flag parades, and cultural celebrations—each echoing Atatürk’s message: “The future is in the skies.”

Sports and Culture: A Global Language

May 19 is not only about commemorating history, but also about connecting across cultures through sports and shared values. As stadiums fill with the sound of cheers and streets come alive with dancing and celebration, the spirit of collaboration and joy is unmistakable.

This makes the holiday a perfect opportunity for international volunteers, especially those participating in Erasmus+ European Solidarity Corps (ESC) projects, to witness and join in a deeply meaningful cultural tradition.

ESC Volunteers: Sharing and Growing Together

ESC volunteers working across Türkiye in fields like youth empowerment, environmental action, social inclusion, and education are not just observers, but active participants in May 19 events. Whether it’s helping organize a youth football tournament, joining a local school for dance performances, or simply waving a flag alongside their Turkish peers, volunteers become part of a living celebration of unity and resilience.

This experience allows ESC participants to:

  • Explore Turkish cultural values firsthand

  • Engage with young leaders and students in meaningful exchanges

  • Celebrate the power of youth in driving change—both locally and globally

One ESC volunteer shared:

“I didn’t expect May 19 to be so emotional. Seeing young people march for the values Atatürk stood for reminded me how connected our futures really are.”

A Message Beyond Borders

Atatürk’s vision of youth as the torchbearers of peace and development resonates beyond Türkiye’s borders. In today’s interconnected world, programs like Erasmus+ ESC embody this vision, bringing together young people from different backgrounds to collaborate, learn, and grow together.

As we commemorate May 19, let’s celebrate all youth—Turkish and international—who inspire us with their passion, creativity, and drive for a better world.

Happy May 19 to all young changemakers, volunteers, and dreamers.

May your energy continue to shape a future built on understanding, action, and solidarity.
