¡HOLA, COMUNIDAD!

Since 2001, the European Commission and the Council of Europe have celebrated the European Day of Languages (EDL) on September 26.

This observance aims to raise awareness of Europe’s linguistic diversity, advocate for cultural heritage, encourage language learning, and promote translation, interpretation, and other language-related professions.

Multilingualism is one of the founding principles of the European Union (EU) and a key part of Europe’s cultural identity. The EU alone has 24 official languages, and it’s estimated that more than 225 indigenous languages are spoken across the continent.

In this regard, Spain boasts one of the richest linguistic landscapes, with Spanish, Catalan/Valencian, Galician, Basque, Aranese, Asturleonese, and Aragonese as predominant local languages. These are living native tongues that millions of Spaniards use every day, at home, in local markets, in universities, and at work.

Nurturing knowledge of European languages helps build connections between different linguistic groups, promotes intercultural understanding, and fosters more tolerant and empathetic societies. Additionally, speaking multiple languages increases your chances of pursuing a career in another EU country, an option that more and more young Europeans are considering.

Throughout this month, the European Union has organised numerous events for you to join. Check out the list of activities HERE to see what’s happening near you and take part in the EDL 2025 celebrations.

(Con algunos días de antelación) ¡FELIZ DÍA EUROPEO DE LAS LENGUAS! :-)
