Greetings OLS community! Today we are talking about Finnish libraries.
Forget about books! Finnish libraries are really special. You can borrow many strange and funny objects from them! Like snowshoes or maybe even a pasta machine! There are also rollators, ie. walking aids, paper shredders or moving carts.
Libraries are much more than places for books. They now offer many objects and services for your everyday life. Although borrowing books has decreased, libraries are constantly developing. You can borrow almost anything from Finnish libraries. The objects you can borrow are often useful things that you don't need every day.
What can you borrow?
Think snowshoes or skis in winter! Some libraries also offer skates or walking sticks. Among the musical instruments, the ukulele has surprised everyone, as it is a very popular instrument to borrow. Game controllers, games and even pasta machines are also available. Borrowing tools is also popular! If you only need a drill or sewing machine once, you can borrow it from the library! A telescope, radon meter, pedometer or 3D milling machine may also be available for loan. Some libraries also have umbrellas and art!
Loan periods are often short, perhaps only a day or a week. That is why these items often cannot be reserved in advance – you just have to ask if they are available!
In some cities, such as Turku and Oulu, you can even borrow season tickets for sports clubs. You get to watch sports games! At least these season tickets cannot be reserved, but you have to go there in person and ask and get them on site when you want to borrow one.
The library listens to the customer's wishes
How do libraries decide what to acquire? The item must be safe, durable and easy to use.
The library also wants to hear your wishes! Sometimes local groups suggest things like binoculars. The library is a place where you can get help, books and objects. And this is not all!
Libraries can also provide help and guidance
Libraries also offer a lot of services, not just physical objects. You can ask almost anything online using the "Ask a Librarian" service. You will receive a response to your email within a few days. Libraries may also offer a lawyer's helpline and help with computers or phones.
Many libraries now offer self-service opening hours. This allows you to enter with your library card even outside of normal opening hours. And cooperation between libraries has increased, so you can order any book or material near your own home library.
Libraries are real centers of knowledge and community in Finland. Go visit and see what you can borrow!
