Hello everyone,
New Year’s Eve is here and it is a great occasion to adopt some new words and phrases to your Slovak vocabulary. If a phrase includes pronoun you, it refers to somebody who you are on first-name terms with (in Slovak, there is a formal and informal you, there will be more information on this topic later).
So let’s dive into it!
Most common wishes for the New Year are:
Všetko dobré do nového roka! All the best to the new Year!
Prajem ti všetko dobré nového roka! I wish you all the best for the new year!
Šťastný nový rok! Happy new year!
To any of the above, you can also add:
Veľa zdravia, šťastia a lásky! Lot of health, happiness and love!
Essential vocabulary related to the New Year:
Predsavzatie resolution
You can ask somebody: Máš nejaké predsavzatia do nového roka? Do you have any resolutions for the new year?
Silvester New Year’s Eve
Ako ideš tráviť Silvestra? What are you doing on New Year’s Eve?
Polnoc midnight
Už je skoro polnoc! It’s almost midnight!
Ohňostroj fireworks
Naše mesto už nerobí ohňostroj. Our town doesn’t organize fireworks anymore.
And how about you, what are your wishes for the new year?
Wishing you all the best in the new year!
