SLOVENE CUISINE

The most popular main dishes in Slovenia are goulash, pork, beef, poultry and fish. Pork is usually served grilled, roasted, or boiled, while beef is usually served as steaks or in stews. Fish is often served grilled or fried. Slovenes also enjoy a variety of side dishes, including potatoes, vegetables, and salads. Potatoes are a staple in Slovenian cuisine and can be boiled, mashed, or served as French fries. Vegetables are usually cooked in olive oil and served with garlic, onions, and spices.

Popular salads include lettuce, cabbage, bean, and potato salad derives from Austrian influences. Also, in December you must try the so-called French salad, which is boiled peas, carrots, potatoes, and eggs with pickles diced in cubes, the seasoning is mayonnaise and spices.

Desserts are an important part of Slovene cuisine. Apple strudel, cakes, and ice cream are all popular desserts. Slovenes also enjoy a variety of fruits, including oranges, pears, apples, and cherries. But the traditional Slovene dessert is Potica, backed at special occasions such as Christmas and Easter.
