Bookshops – get working on your Maltese!

If you want to learn Maltese, you’re probably going to need some books!

As is the case for most languages with the exception of English or other languages with a higher number of native speakers, finding resources online that show you the use of Maltese in a standard way are unfortunately somewhat scarce.
Although finding What you need to do if you’re determined to learn Maltese is to go to bookshops and find yourself some good Maltese books. This is a guide through Malta’s best bookshops, what you’ll find and what to expect when you get there.

BDL Books

BDL is a family-owned business (like many of the bookshops in this list) and is also a publishing house. Located in San Ġwann, BDL offers a wide range of books in both Maltese and English and has a great number of resources for newcomers to the Maltese language. What is particularly special about BDL is its selection of Maltese language games which could be a fun alternative to the traditional way of learning a new language.

Kixott

Kixott is a bookshop off the beaten path and a hub for the alternative literary scene in Malta. Apart from being a good way to mix and mingle with its movie nights, poetry readings and workshops, Kixott is also a great place to dip your toes into Malta’s contemporary literary scene. Whilst the selection of books might be a bit more difficult to grasp for novice Maltese language learners, grabbing some of Kixott’s selection of Maltese poetry is a great way for you to practise the rhythms of Maltese. Kixott also offers a curated selection of books in other languages as well.

Agenda Bookshop

Agenda is one of the more commercial bookshops on the island. With around 9 locations around the Maltese Islands, these outlets are easy to come by and have a good selection of Maltese literature from most of Malta’s publishing houses. Whilst finding Agenda is easy, the selection of books between one outlet and another varies. Your best bet to find a good selection of Maltese books is to visit Agenda’s outlets at PAMA in Mosta, Republic Street in Valletta or at Malta International Airport.

Klabb Kotba Maltin

One of the oldest bookshops and publishers whose output is strongly based around books in Maltese or dealing with Malta, Klabb Kotba Martin (literally Maltese Book Club) is a small shop in Valletta’s Strait Street. Despite the diminutive size of the shop, there is a lot this company has published and a lot of books for you to choose from.

Bonus: Malta’s Public Libraries

This doesn’t technically count as a bookshop per se, but Malta’s public libraries are a great and underutilised resource to source books in Maltese. Plus, why snub them when you can get a hold of reading material without spending a cent? Most of Malta’s towns have a public library, and have books in Maltese which can be loaned after registering to become a Malta Libraries member. This application process is simple and can be done online.
