Use of CRMs in method validation

Food in the EU is very safe. Many measures are taken to ensure that in the EU all food marketed is safe for human consumption.
Careful analysis is performed to monitor the limit values set to ensure the safe food. However, can we be sure that the analyses are reliable? The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission develops Certified Reference Materials to support laboratories who want to check the quality of their measurement methods. These Certified Reference Materials, or CRMs, can help laboratories to assess whether their measurements give correct results. In order to assess the accuracy of methods and demonstrate the proficiency of laboratories, it is important to consider the measurement uncertainty as well as the metrological traceability. In this module, we will show you how to validate a new method and how to estimate the measurement uncertainty of its results.
