One question asked a lot by people unused to certain customs are the following on Good Friday:

1. Why were there red crosses everywhere?

2. Why are flags flying at half mast?

3. What are these strange circular bread loaves everyone is carrying around today?

Good Friday recalls the crucifixion of Christ, which answers the first two questions... but what about the third?

That is the famous Qaqgħa tal-Appostli.

That particular loaf of bread, of a particular round shape, adorned with whole almonds. It literally translates to 'Apostles ring bread'. If you fancy trying to make it here is a recipe

Also, according to tradition, on Good Friday the weather is always grey, murky and rainy even if the days before and after it are sunny. If you look outside, the day has definitely kept to tradition!
