On 9 May, we celebrate Europe Day. Why this date? It has a symbolic meaning.
On 9 May 1950, then French Foreign Minister and future European Parliament President Robert Schuman announced the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, controlled by a common higher authority.
Robert Schuman wanted the countries to share production of coal and steel in order to make war ‘not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible’. By joining this initiative, European countries laid the foundations for lasting peace in Europe. This model of international cooperation was the first step in the process of building the European Union.
