Five of the Best Beaches in Malta

Language, culture, history… it’s all well and good – but you’ve been studying hard and what you really want to do to is to dive into the sea! As March slowly comes to a close, the water starts getting warmer, as do the days.

Malta is lucky enough to have warm weather for most of the year, with over 300 days of sun. The water is generally coldest in the months around March, which means you can have a jump into crystalline seas even in January, when the water is still around 18°C. Start a new tradition in your life: the start-of-the-year dip!

Here’s a selection of beaches, both sandy and rocky, around Malta you might want to visit. Some well-known, others less so.

  1. Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, Mellieħa

Absolutely gorgeous sandy beach surrounded by clay cliffsides, which makes you feel like you’re in a secluded bay. It is quite an iconic bay and together with nearby Golden Beach are often known as the Mellieħa Riviera.

  1. Il-Ġnejna, Mġarr

Another pretty one, this honey-coloured sandy beach is quite a hike down but there’s a bus (routes 225 or 101) that will get you there. It is not often crowded and has a laid-back feel. Also check out Lippija Tower, a beautiful medieval tower. You can then stop in Mġarr for a Ħobża biż-Żejt or Fenek, check the article on Maltese food for more ideas.

  1. St. Peter’s Pool, Delimara, Marsaxlokk

A series of beautiful natural pools carved into the stone, with clear azure waters, this is a favourite in the South of Malta. Marsaxlokk is also known for its weekly fish market on Sundays.

  1. Ir-Ramla il-Ħamra, Gozo
On the island of Gozo, Ramla l-Ħamra (which roughly means ‘red sand’) is another quiet sandy beach surrounded by fields and cliffs, with crystalline waters. Just up the road there are the famed (including by UNESCO!) Ġgantija temples. A statue of Our Lady of Victories stands majestically at the centre of the beach.

  1. Slugs Bay, Mellieħa

The contender for one of Malta’s most secret beaches, this tiny rocky beach is quite a stretch to get to, but rewards with a rocky inlet and pool that, if you go early enough, make you feel like you’re alone in the world. Also visit nearby Armier Beach.

Do you like to swim? Which beaches did you like the most?
Do you have other places you’d recommend?
