Coping With Loneliness When Being Abroad
Being abroad alone is surely a thrilling experience, but it can also be intimidating. Above all, as you change your surroundings you may experience feelings of loneliness, before you get settled. This applies especially if you are abroad for the first time and for a longer period of time.
Learning how to cope with possible loneliness is thus important to ensure a healthy and happy time while abroad. There are many ways to cope, and finding what works best for you is key. Here are some tips to consider.
Try to keep yourself occupied with hobbies or activities that you enjoy. Do not stop your hobbies you had back home. So if it is possible, you should keep your familiar way of relaxation and way to unwind. Whether it's reading, writing, drawing, exploring the city museums or the gym, keeping yourself busy can help alleviate feelings of loneliness. This can be especially helpful if your hobbies or activities are something you enjoy doing alone. Or if it is a group activity, join the local equivalent for what you used to do back home.

Of course, it is important to stay connected with your loved ones back home. Thanks to modern technology and limitless wifi, it's easier than ever to keep in touch with family and friends through video calls, text messages, or emails. Regular communication with loved ones can help you feel connected to home.
As said before, join a local club or group that shares your interests or hobbies. This can be a great way to meet new people and make friends who have similar interests to you. Volunteering at a local organisation or charity, like ESN or for example the Red Cross is useful. Not only can this help you give back to the community, but it can also introduce you to like-minded individuals who are passionate about similar causes.
And of course, OLS forums help you to learn the Finnish language or take classes in something you've always wanted to learn, such as cooking or dancing. This can be a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and meet new people who share your interests.
Take advantage of technology and use social media to connect with others who may be in a similar situation as you. Joining Facebook groups or forums can be a great way to connect with others who are also abroad and looking for ways to cope with loneliness.
Remember to take care of your physical and mental health. Exercising, eating well, and practicing mindfulness or meditation can help you feel better both physically and mentally. Cooking Finnish Christmas treats may be a nice experience. Did you see the blog article?
You should at least explore your new home city and its surroundings. Going on walks, visiting landmarks, or taking day trips can help you feel more connected. Study the city with a tourist guide book, join a walking tour, or take a boat trip or a train ride to explore. At least if anything, take photographs!

If you are an avid reader, Finland is a good place with its extensive library system. You will find not only books in Finnish, but also books in other languages. On top of books, there are music records, videos, games and even some libraries carry a selection of tools and hobby tools, like sewing machines, that you can borrow.
At last, remember that it's okay to feel lonely sometimes. In those moments it is important to give yourself time to adjust. Talk to a fellow student who may be in the same situation, for example. Just remember that coping with loneliness is a process, and it's important to be patient.
After a while when you have friends, university activities and if you can maintain some of your routines even in your new country, it will help alleviate those feelings of loneliness.
