His second play, "Wild Flesh" (Диво месо), stood as a testament to his immense talent and earned him prestigious accolades. In 1980, it captured both the Sterijino Pozorje Theatre Festival Award for Best Yugoslav Play of the Year and the 11th October Prize, the highest recognition in the Republic of Macedonia at the time. This remarkable achievement marked the beginning of a prolific career that spanned 23 full-length plays for the theatre.

Stefanovski's works, including "Wild Flesh," "Hi-Fi," "Flying on the Spot" (Лет во место), "Tattooed Souls" (Тетовирани души), "The Black Hole" (Црна дупка), "Chernodrinski Comes Back Home" (Чернодрински се враќа дома), "Sarajevo, an oratorio for the theatre," "Hotel Europa," and "The Demon of Debar Maalo" (Демонот од Дебар маало), have captivated audiences worldwide. These plays serve as a testament to Stefanovski's ability to explore profound themes, from migration and post-communist transition to identity and the essence of humanity itself.

His ability to craft narratives that were both thought-provoking and emotionally engaging was unparalleled. Stefanovski's plays were a reflection of his profound understanding of human nature, tackling themes of identity, politics, and social change. Each word he penned had the power to ignite conversations and challenge the status quo.

Born into a theatrical family in Bitola, Yugoslavia, on 27 April 1952, Stefanovski displayed his artistic brilliance from a young age. At just 22, he saw his first play come to life on stage. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Stefanovski led a nomadic existence, dividing his time between the Republic of Macedonia, the United Kingdom, and Sweden. In 2000, he eventually settled in the UK, embracing his dual Macedonian/UK citizenship.

Stefanovski's work transcended borders and confronted vital issues of our time. Through his plays, he explored the complex dynamics of migration, the challenges of post-communist transition, and the intricate facets of identity. His narratives delved deep into the essence of what it means to be human, leaving an enduring impact on those who experienced his works.

Beyond his creative endeavors, Stefanovski devoted himself to academia, teaching creative writing for the theatre and film. His passion for nurturing young talents and his dedication to the art form inspired countless aspiring writers and filmmakers. Stefanovski's guidance helped shape a new generation of storytellers, ensuring the continued growth and development of the Macedonian creative scene.

Stefanovski's untimely death in 2018 left a void in the artistic landscape. However, his legacy lives on through his works, which continue to captivate audiences and stimulate intellectual discourse. His ability to fuse the personal and the political, the universal and the local, made him a distinctive voice in the literary world.

Goran Stefanovski was not only a masterful storyteller but also an advocate for freedom of expression and cultural diversity. He understood the power of the arts to challenge existing norms and break down barriers. His unwavering commitment to social justice and his ability to shed light on marginalized voices made him an inspiration to many.

His cremated remains have been returned to his homeland and an Old-World sycamore (platanus orientalis) has been planted in his memory in a little park in Skopje at the heart of the part of the city he loved best, Debar Maalo.

A bronze sculpture has now been commissioned to be placed under the tree. It consists of a bench with a statue of Goran seated on it and room for someone else to sit beside him and enjoy his company for a while.
