Salmiakki

Finnish salmiakki, also known just as salmiakki or salty liquorice, is a candy and flavour  in Finland and other Nordic countries. It is known for the unique combination of salty and liquorice flavour, which definitely is an acquired taste for those unfamiliar with it.

Salmiakki divides opinions

Salmiakki gets its flavour from ammonium chloride, also known as salmiakki salt, which is used as a flavouring agent. This gives the candy its salty, and slightly bitter taste. The intensity of the flavour can vary, ranging from mild to extremely salty, depending on the brand and the specific product.

Salmiakki candies come in various forms, including hard candies, chewy gummies, chocolates, and even ice creams. Some popular types of salmiakki candies include salmiakki pastilles, salmiakki coins, and salmiakki-filled chocolates. In Finland, salmiakki is not only consumed as a sweet treat but is also used as a flavouring in other products. It can be found in beverages such as salmiakki soft drinks. Salmiakki is also used as an ingredient in certain savoury dishes, such as salmiakki-marinated meat.

Salmiakki divides opinions, you either love it or hate it. Not everyone in Finland loves it, but then others - they just can’t get enough of it! It is often regarded as a unique and acquired taste, with some people loving its salty bite, while others find it too strong or unfamiliar.

If you're curious about trying salmiakki, it's best to start with milder varieties and gradually work your way up to stronger flavours. Keep in mind that it might take a few tries to develop a taste for it, but it can become an addictive treat for those who enjoy the strong flavour.
