Malta’s classical music scene resonates with the echoes of centuries past… and its contemporary version. In this exploration of classical music in Malta, we will delve into the island's musical history, spotlight some of its classical artists, and highlight the festivals and events that make the Maltese classical music experience truly exceptional.

A Historical Prelude 

Classical music in Malta has a legacy dating back centuries, reflecting the island's cultural intersections and influences from various civilizations. The story of Maltese classical music is a harmonious blend of local traditions and international inspirations. 

The Knights of St. John, a religious and military order, ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798. During their tenure, they played a significant role in shaping the island's musical heritage. The knights introduced European classical music to Malta, laying the foundation for future generations of Maltese musicians. 

In the 19th century, Italian opera swept across Europe, including Malta. The Maltese embraced this art form, with opera becoming a prominent fixture of the local cultural scene. The Teatru Manoel, built in 1731, remains one of Europe's oldest working theaters and a testament to Malta's love for the performing arts.  

The Maestros of Malta 

Malta has produced several classical musicians who have left a mark on the international stage. Here are a few of the prominent names in Maltese classical music:

Charles Camilleri (1931-2009) 

Charles Camilleri, often referred to as Malta's national composer, was a prolific composer and pianist. His compositions blend classical, jazz, and folk influences, and he is renowned for the "Maltese Dances," a collection of pieces that celebrate the spirit of his homeland. My personal favourite is “Hemda”, his piano pieces. 

Joseph Vella (1942-2018)  

Joseph Vella was a composer, conductor, and organist known for his contributions to choral and symphonic music. His works have been performed by orchestras and choirs worldwide, and he was awarded the prestigious "Gallarate Prize for Composers" in Italy. 

Karl Fiorini (b. 1979 - ) 

Karl Fiorini is a Maltese composer and conductor known for his contemporary classical compositions. His works often explore themes of identity and cultural heritage and have been performed in diverse settings, from concert halls to multimedia installations. 

Celebrating Classical Music in Malta 

Malta offers a vibrant calendar of classical music festivals, concerts, and events that cater to both locals and visitors. These celebrations showcase the island's commitment to nurturing and preserving its rich musical heritage. 

Valletta International Baroque Festival  

The Valletta International Baroque Festival is an annual celebration of Baroque music that brings together international and local artists. Held in Valletta, Malta's capital city, the festival features performances in historic venues, immersing attendees in the timeless beauty of Baroque compositions.  

Opera in the Open Air 

Malta's warm Mediterranean climate provides the perfect backdrop for open-air opera performances. Throughout the summer, opera companies stage productions under the starry skies, often at iconic locations like the Royal Opera House ruins in Valletta.  

Concerts by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra 

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is the leading symphony orchestra in Malta, delivering captivating performances of classical and contemporary repertoire. The MPO's concerts are a regular highlight on the Maltese cultural calendar. 

Birgu Festival of Music 

 The Birgu Festival of Music offers a unique experience by featuring classical music performances in the charming and historic town of Birgu. The festival combines music with stunning architecture, creating an enchanting atmosphere for attendees.

Efforts to preserve Malta's classical music heritage and cultivate emerging talent are ongoing. Educational institutions like the University of Malta's School of Performing Arts and the Malta Youth Orchestra play pivotal roles in nurturing young musicians.  

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra's Education Programme 

The MPO's education program focuses on introducing students to classical music and orchestral performance. It provides valuable learning experiences and encourages young talent to explore their musical potential. 

Local Music Schools and Academies 

Numerous music schools and academies across Malta offer classical music education, fostering a new generation of musicians and composers. Also, the several każini (band clubs), present in the towns and cities on the Maltese Islands tend to be the first exposure to a musical instrument for many young people interesting in learning how to play an instrument. 

The Malta International Music Master Classes

These master classes attract internationally acclaimed musicians who impart their knowledge and expertise to aspiring artists. The program covers a wide range of instruments and vocal disciplines.
