Živijo, OLS Slovene learning community,
If you're on a mobility program in Slovenia, you're probably feeling festive
this time of year, with St. Martin's Day and everything else behind us, and a
happy December approaching.
In case you missed some of the content on our forums, here are the reminders:
Martinovanje / St. Martin's Day Blog Post
In Slovenia, Martinovanje
is still a very important holiday, as it is considered to be the autumn
carnival that in some countries begins the forty-day fast. In tradition, this is the end of the
shepherding season and the beginning of the coldest time of the year. Also, on St. Martin's Day, the grape juice is ripened for consumption by a blessing.
Roasted goose or duck stuffed
with chestnuts or apples, with a side dish of miller and red cabbage is a most
characteristic combination for this
time of the year in Slovenia.
Slovene traditional breakfast / Slovenski tradicionalni zajtrk
In addition to honey, an essential ingredient of the Slovene diet, the Traditional Slovene Breakfast consists of bread,
butter, milk and an apple or other Slovene fruit. This year, more attention is being paid to bread. The Traditional Slovene Breakfast project aims to introduce
students and young people to
the importance of healthy eating habits, healthy lifestyles, sustainable
eating, reducing food waste, the culture of eating, the importance of food from
our neighborhood - local food and typical traditional dishes, and most
traditionally, to serve a traditional Slovene breakfast to students
in educational establishments on this day.
Story
from Jay: 10 years after the mobility interview
Jay Banerjee, a Canadian finished Medicine with the Residency at the University
of Toronto and works as Clinician in the Toronto Area 12 hours per day, 6 days
per week, trying very hard with others to make up to shorten the waiting list
in health care because of COVID-19, and still finds time for Swimming, Hiking,
and Soccer. Before that, he was working as a consultant in aviation medicine
traveling the world for a few years. In 2012 soon before graduating, he
decided to arrange an international exchange program in Maribor, Slovenia for
three months as a hospital doctors exchange and he believes his exchange to
Slovenia influenced his life greatly. He was also very active at the
Canadian-Slovenian Chamber of Commerce, at the društvo VTIS for Toronto office,
etc. We welcomed him with a culinary brunch of Slovene traditional goods in
Maribor in August 2023. We asked him a few questions to explain memories of his
mobility and learning the Slovene language in Maribor.
