Hi there!

Whenever you go abroad it’s always good to learn a few basics, especially when you’re about to live there for several months or more. In this post you will find a lesson of basic greetings in French that, when used, will sure be appreciated by locals.

Greetings Lesson:

  • Hello – Salut. Salut is more informal than hello though. In formal contests, it is much better to use bonjour

  • Goodbye – Au revoir

  • Good morning – Bonjour

  • Good afternoon – Bonjour. There is no difference between good morning and good afternoon in French, bonjour can be used both in the morning and in the afternoon.

  • Good evening – Bonsoir

  • My name is … –  Je m'appelle

  • What is your name? – Comment t'appelles-tu ?

  • Nice to meet you – Enchantée

  • How are you? – Comment vas tu ?

  • I’m fine thank you – Je vais bien, merci

  • Please – S'il vous plaît (formal) / S'il te plaît (informal)

  • Thank you – Merci

  • Excuse me – Excusez-moi (formal) / Excuse-moi (informal)

I hope you enjoyed this lesson! Let me know in the comments below if you have already used some greetings in French and how the locals reacted.

Cheers!

Bonjour Lilas,

Great post! Very useful to know the basic expressions. I'm feeling more and more interested in learning french. Once I have a higher level I would like to join the speaking sessions.

I would like to sign up for classes soon. Do you recommend me any online or physical academy, with a centre in Madrid, to start learning the language?

Merci beaucoup,
Antonio

Bonjour Antonio !

Thank you for this kind comment. I am very happy you found this thread useful and you are becoming more interested in learning French :)

I unfortunately do not have any online/physical classes to recommend.. Do you feel like you're not getting enough from the OLS classes ?

Excellente journée à toi.
